All Irish Writers Centre remote courses take place on Irish Standard Time (GMT+1)
In this six-week remote course for writers of all levels, you will use fiction to give voice to the LGBT+ experience. In class, you will perform close analyses of key passages from LGBT+ novels and short stories and will undertake writing experiments based on what you find. As homework each week, you will read one novel extract or short story and complete one short writing exercise. Each session you will focus on a single topic, such as selfhood, identity, viewpoint, and defamiliarisation, with the aim of producing one finished short story of our own by the end of the course.
Gavin McCrea was born in Dublin in 1978. His first novel, Mrs Engels, was shortlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize and the Walter Scott Prize, and longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. His second novel, The Sisters Mao, will be published in Spring 2021. He is currently Writer in Residence at the University of Limerick.
