Who am I? Where did I come from? Where am I going? These are the vital questions which feed the art of memoir. The objective of this course is to provide a map and the tools for writing your personal story. Through examining the work of successful memoirists, we’ll explore theme, structure, voice and narrative, with particular interest in character and place. The approach will be practical, with the emphasis on moving our stories from the head to the page in a safe and encouraging environment. Participants will be asked to read their work, and to comment constructively on the work of their fellow classmates. The class is suitable both for those who are getting started – and for those who have yet to finish – an autobiographical narrative.
Ivy Bannister has written a memoir, a book of short stories, a poetry collection, several plays for RTE radio, and more than fifty pieces for Sunday Miscellany and The Living Word. Awards include the Francis MacManus and Hennessy awards.
