The dissident Vaclev Havel believed we must “serve the truth under all circumstances as our own essential experience.” Through exercises and readings, we will explore the increasingly boundary-pushing potential of non-fiction, dipping into autobiography, essay, reportage and even oral history. The course will focus on honing your subject, developing your voice, and incorporating the basics of good shoe-leather journalism. Participants will be encouraged to produce their own piece of non-fiction work and get down to the nitty gritty of pitching and publishing.

*Feedback and edits will be provided for assignments completed during the course.

Here's What Other Writers Thought:

"The workshop offered insight into her work as a journalist as well as a chance to explore approaches to my writing that I hadn't considered before. The discussion with the other participants, who had different background and styles in terms of their writing sparked so many ideas. A really interesting day and I am already bringing some of the learning into my writing." - Mairead

"I recently attended Caelainn Hogan's wonderful Creative Non-fiction workshop in Cavan. Before the workshop, Caelainn had sent us reading articles beforehand and the day was largely built on these. Through articles like Hiroshima by John Hersey we learnt how to grasp the readers' attention by an innovative lede and how external evidence can be brought in through experts or characters (as in The Rings of  Saturn by W G Sebald). Her own piece Braving Cancer amidst the Chaos of Syria showed how we get to the nuts and bolts of a story and overcome  difficulties. There were brilliant angles given to pitching a story. It was relaxed throughout and there were good opportunities for questions. The day was full of insights and I would recommend it to anybody starting or on the road to writing creative non-fiction." - William Burns
