Course Summary:

*The facilitator of this course will explore the therapeutic benefits of creativity and writing from the perspective of a professional writer. She is not a mental health professional.

Join seasoned facilitator Cat Hogan for a six-week creative writing course focused on creativity and mental health.

Course Outline:

During the sessions, you will explore the benefit of Bibliotherapy - creative arts therapies with the purpose of healing - and the therapeutic value of writing. Imagination, self-awareness, empathy and conflict resolution will be some of the themes studied through fiction, free writing, literature and poetry.

The physical act of writing has been linked with improved mood, wellbeing, decreased stress levels, and the health benefits of lower blood pressure (The American Journal of Psychiatric Treatment). Writing improves motor skills, memory and communication. The emphasis will be on storytelling, writing, imagination, emotional intelligence, self-confidence, interpersonal skills and self-identity. The course will be interactive and above all, fun!

Course Outcomes:

On completion of the course, participants will have formed a habit of writing daily and will have techniques and observations from the therapeutic benefit of writing to apply to their own daily lives.  Self-expression gives us a sense of autonomy- an anchor so to speak, and as we emerge from the trauma of lockdown and a global pandemic, we need all the tools at our disposal.
