Course Summary:

If you’ve always wanted to write but don’t know where to start, or if you’re returning to writing after some time away, this course is for you. This 8-week introduction to creative writing aims to get your creativity flowing in an inspiring and enjoyable way. In Spinning Straw Into Gold you will mine your memories and  hone your observational skills  to spark your imagination and create compelling fiction, poetry and non-fiction.

Course Outline:

You will begin with where to get ideas and how to get started. Then, using writing exercises and discussion you will explore the basic elements of craft, such as character, setting, plot, dialogue and voice. You will work on developing your unique writing style, and be directed to resources that will help to strengthen and sustain  your writing practice. You will look at examples from literature and learn from the greats. You will focus mostly on short fiction, but will also try your hand at poetry/ non-fiction/ memoir/nature-writing.

In each session you will engage in fun in-class writing exercises, share ideas in a safe collaborative environment and discuss sample literary extracts. Weekly reading and writing homework will be given for those who have the time and inclination.

Course Outcomes:

Participants in this course will come away with a compendium of creative writing tools. All tricks of the trade will be shared. Students will know how and where to look for ideas and will understand how to go about creating credible characters, evocative settings and realistic dialogue. They will gain confidence in sharing and discussing their work with others, and will know where to look for resources to continue and sustain their writing practice.
