Navigating Publishing Contracts with Conor Kostick
Starts: Thurs 6 August 2020
Time: 3pm (Irish Standard Time, GMT+1)
When a writer is offered a publishing contract, this is a highly significant moment and the temptation is to rush ahead and sign it to move forward as quickly as possible to the publication of a new book. After all, a new book is a collaboration between publisher and author, to their mutual benefit. Yet there is no publishing company or contract that is ideal. And some of them have clauses that are unfair and harmful to the interests of the author.
Conor Kostick has been Disputes Officer for the Irish Writers Union for over fifteen years and has seen hundreds of publishing contracts, from all the publishers operating in Ireland. Based on this extensive experience, training and participation in successful negotiations for contract changes with Publishing Ireland, Conor will run through the most significant clauses of modern contracts and highlight the kinds of issues that need to be challenged by authors before signing.
