Facilitation, like writing, is both a skill and an art. The skill comes from learning the fundamentals of teaching; a thorough knowledge of our subject; and of course, practice, practice, practice. The art comes from combining our skills, knowledge and practice with our unique blend of personality and style to facilitate an empowering and enriching learning experience. Whether you are looking to facilitate a workshop, or learn mentoring skills, online or face-to-face, this interactive workshop is for you.
- Understand psychological safety and how to create it in a creative workshop setting
- Learn and share examples of best practice creative writing teaching methods
- Learn and share techniques and tools for giving feedback in a constructive way
- Access the writing community’s 'hive mind’, sharing expertise and knowledge with each other
- Design the outline of a tailored creative writing workshop
- Participants will come away with:
- A basic understanding of the fundamentals of facilitation
- Practical creative writing workshop tips, tools and resources
- An outline of a tailored creative writing workshop

Some Participant Feedback from Previous ‘Writing Facilitation Skills’ Course for The Ladder Project:
What were the highlights of the course for you?
The open-ended possibility; catering to a wide variety of writers and interests. Really skilfully thought out and applied
A definite highlight was getting to meet all of the enthusiastic, positive and diverse writers on the course. I enjoyed the group work and the conversations that we had in the Break Rooms. It was wonderful to see and feel everyone's passion and excitement for the project.
The info given was really helpful, Anne was great at instructing the class and the group work was very useful.
I learned a huge amount about delivering a workshop. Anne is an excellent facilitator. And I really enjoyed meeting the other participants.
The group was diverse and open minded.
Hearing ideas from fellow members.
The content the structure the pacing the tech and the people not in any order btw.
Everyone’s eagerness to learn, everybody was on time, we got great work done on our time frame and the participation of everybody. I particularly liked Anne’s facilitation and her knowledge was amazing and Sue was brilliant for having the idea and I feel the northwest will now benefit from this.
Highlights of the course content: Creating a community of enquiry, giving feedback and learning/teaching tips Highlights of the course as an experience: The breakaway groups were fantastic, allowing people much more time to discuss and contribute than you might get in a 'full-room' scenario.
Learning about both the psychology and practicality of running successful writing sessions. Meeting like-minded people and having the opportunity to make connections. The friendly, relaxed yet professional atmosphere.
Meeting like- minded people. Learning from their experiences and knowing that we are all different in our interest but similar in what we want to achieve. Great course.
Networking with other local writers - it really expanded who I know in the writing community locally. Anne Tannam was excellent as a facilitator.
