Bergen City

OPEN: Irish-Norwegian Writers’ Exchange 2019

Deadline extended to Tuesday 25 June, 2019!

Call for Irish Writer to take part in Irish-Norwegian Writers’ Exchange in Autumn 2019

The Irish Writers Centre is delighted that its close relationship with the Norwegian Embassy in Ireland is continuing to flourish with this announcement of another Irish-Norwegian Writers’ Exchange supported by the Norwegian Embassy and Hordaland Fylkeskommune (County Council).

What is the Irish-Norwegian Writers’ Exchange?

The Exchange consists essentially of a two week-long residency for one writer from each country to work on their writing, with one or two public or workshop commitments during the week.  The Irish writer will travel to Bergen, Norway in the last fortnight of September 2019 (exact dates tbc), and the Norwegian writer will travel to Anam Cara Artists’ and Writers’ Retreat in the week of Oct 14th and River Mill Writers’ Retreat in the week of Oct 21st (exact dates tbc).  We anticipate that the two selected writers will meet in Bergen, (and time allowing, also in Ireland) and support one another during their residencies, perhaps reading together publicly.  The Norwegian Writer-in-Residence (WIR) may spend a night in another location on the way to or from the retreats, and if feasible, the Irish WIR may be asked to host.

More Information about the Bergen residency

The Irish WIR will have their own self-catering accommodation in Bergen city centre, kindly supported by Hordaland County Council. The Irish WIR will also have a desk to work in at Norsk Forfattensentrum – the local Literature house in Bergen. During their stay they will be expected take part in a public reading, as well as meeting with the local writing community or similar.  They will also meet the selected Norwegian writer who will also act as “host”.

The Irish WIR’s flights to Bergen are covered with the kind support of the Norwegian Embassy.  The Irish WIR must provide their own incidental travel and meal costs, as well as self-catering needs.

Who is eligible to apply?

This is an open call to writers who are ordinarily resident on the island of Ireland with a proven track record and at least one book of fiction, short stories or children's fiction published by a recognised publisher. Priority will be given to works of fiction, either novel or short story writing for children or adults.
