In this course you will explore different ways to access memory using a range of triggers and writing techniques. You will read examples of memoir writing and think about the issues that arise in any memoir project – consideration of those whose lives intersect in our stories; how research might help the project, the options we have in terms of form and voice; issues of truth and fictionalisation. Students may work in prose or poetry and on one long or several short pieces.

Maureen Boyle’s debut poetry collection, The Work of a Winter was published by Arlen House Press in 2019 and was shortlisted for the Strong Poetry Award. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Queen’s University Belfast. She won the Ireland Chair of Poetry Prize; the Strokestown International Poetry Competition; the Fish Short Memoir Prize and the inaugural Ireland Chair of Poetry Travel Bursary to research the poem The Nunwell Letter. A limited edition pamphlet of this poem appeared in June 2019 and a pamphlet called Strabane, of a poem broadcast on Radio 4 in January 2019, is forthcoming from Arlen House.  She taught Creative Writing with the Open University for ten years and teaches English in St Dominic’s Grammar School, Belfast.
