This starter course will explore elements of the writing craft such as character, voice, dialogue, and basic editing. Participants will produce their own material by responding to writing prompts. They will have an opportunity to discuss and receive feedback on their work in a supportive and encouraging environment. They will also read and discuss selected texts, making the essential step to reading as writers. Through this combination of writing, reading and discussion, the course will address the difficulties encountered by beginning writers.

Paula McGrath is the author of critically acclaimed novels Generation and A History of Running Away, both published by John Murray. She holds an MFA from UCD, where she has taught on the undergraduate Creative Writing elective since 2013. She is currently working towards an Irish Research Council-funded PhD at the University of Limerick.
