Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge / Irish Language Writers Meet-up

Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge / Irish Language Writers Meet-up

FREE

Saturday 17 January

10.30am–3.30pm

Irish language writers are encouraged to come together for this event to discuss the state of Irish language publishing and the needs of writers, publishers, booksellers and readers.
The new umbrella group Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge will look at ways of developing a larger readership for writers choosing to work entirely or partly in Irish, be that in print or in the electronic media. The event will be in Irish and is open to anyone writing in Irish wishing to be involved in developing a representative group and strategy.

At a lively public event at Oireachtas na Samhna in Killarney, poets, prose writers and dramatists were anxious that the voice of Irish language writers themselves be heard when arts organisations and state agencies are making plans to promote Irish literature in general. This meeting will help to formulate proposals and policies which will help promote writing in Irish, with a view to presenting them to a range of funding bodies. Many writers feel that more development programmes are needed to assist the work of Irish language writers and publishers to reach as wide a readership as possible, including translations of contemporary Irish writing to other languages, and more regular inclusion of Irish language writers at literary events in Ireland and overseas.

For further information or proposals for inclusion in the discussions please contact the convenor of the event: cathalpoirteir@gmail.com
The first part of the day will be papers delivered by speakers Alan Titley, Anna Heussaff, Robert McMillen and Gabriel Rosenstock. Later sessions will involve breakout groups, reporting back to the group at large and finishing, time permitting, with an open discussion and the election of a steering group.
