Writing about your own experiences, either in the form of an essay or a book-length memoir, is the essence of Life Writing. In this intensive, interactive, and enjoyable one-day course for beginners, writers new to Life Writing will learn ideas about Memoir writing, get to understand the form, and have the opportunity to write about their own experiences. Touching on different aspects of Life Writing from diary-writing to essay to creative non-fiction, with an emphasis on the personal memoir, participants will read and discuss key examples of the form, use writing exercises during the session, and will be guided through the basic ideas and skills they need to begin writing their own life stories, leaving the session with new material they can develop further.
Arnold Thomas Fanning’s short stories, articles, and essays have been published in The Dublin Review, Banshee, the Irish Times, Crazyhorse Magazine, The Phoenix Anthology of New Irish Writing, gorse, Longreads.com, Paper Visual Art Journal, and The Lonely Crowd. His work has also been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and RTÉ Radio 1 including for Arena and A Living Word. Mind on Fire: A Memoir of Madness and Recovery, his first book, was published by Penguin Ireland in 2018 and was shortlisted for the Butler Literary Award and The Irish Book Awards Newcomer of the Year, as well as Longlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize 2019.
