Hosted by journalist and author Sree Sen, Beyond Language is a 3-week course for writers who have English as a second language. Whether it is journalism, blogging or general creative writing, the course will focus on ways to embrace one’s cultural identity and navigate the ways of English language writing. The emphasis will be on encouraging people to write in English, within the ambit of their own cultural references.
The two-hour sessions will have discussions about overcoming writing barriers, developing discipline, accepting own cultures, followed by writing exercises. There will be open talks regarding problems participants face, question-answer sessions and listening to the work of others. The participants will be required to write during the sessions and share it with others for respectful feedback. There will also be tasks assigned for the week that will be discussed in following sessions.
The participants will learn different ways of finding inspiration to write in the English language, practical advice on how to start and continue writing, and gain confidence of merging their own native cultures with expressions in the English language.
