Book Launch: Memory and Desire by Val Mulkerns
Thursday 12 May
On 12 May, we celebrate the launch of Memory and Desire, a special new selection of short fiction from Val Mulkerns.
A long-standing figure of Irish letters and member of Aosdána, Val Mulkerns has written four novels, three short story collections, criticism and journalism. Particularly renowned for her skill as a short fiction writer, she features in all major contemporary Irish literature anthologies. The new title is her tenth book.
Memory and Desire’s memorable tales run in time from 1916 to 1980, and its first story is based on the experiences of her father, who, following the Battle of the Four Courts, was imprisoned both in Knutsford Prison and the notorious Frongoch camp.
Colm Tóibín described the title story as: 'one of the finest short stories that has been published in Ireland for many years' and Sebastian Barry calls her 'a masterly writer in the tradition of Seán O’Faoláin'.
With 91 years to write about, she’s currently finalising a memoir, to be published next year. Meantime, you'll see Memory and Desire in bookshops around the country, with its distinctive cover artwork by Irish artist Louise Newman.
Or come along to the launch which is free admission, but RSVP would be appreciated at firstname.lastname@example.org
