Swan Press invites you to the launch of Pathways through Pastures Old and New by Mary Guckian.
Mary Guckian is a poet and photographer. Her poems have appeared in literary publications, magazines and in podcasts online. She has published three books of poetry with Swan Press, Perfume of the Soil, The Road to Gowel and Walking on Snow. Her poems are included in A Life, a play written by Victor Feldman and performed at the Irish Writer's Centre. Mary, a native of County Leitrim, lives at Ringsend. Mary is a long time member of Rathmines Writers Workshop and worked with the members publishing several anthologies of their writing over the past 30 years.
"Mary Guckian's strength is to create vivid pictures in the mind of the reader inviting them to go for a walk with all their senses opened
up to appreciate how life in all its variant forms goes about its business day after day."
Kathrin Kobus, Writer and Journalist.
"In Mary Guckian's poems the familiar theme of labour is expressed in language which echoes its theme and derives its force from an understanding of the relations between word and world."
Dr. John Sears, Manchester Metropolitan University.
"Mary Guckian's poetry is steeped in country rhythms and seasonal rituals. There's innocence and experience conveyed through the prism of her distinctly feminine tone, a softness revealed in subtle observations."
Eileen Casey, Poet and Writer.
"Mary Guckian observes people we would rather pass on the other side, rather than talk to them."
Late Columba O'Hagan, Architect and Writer.
"Mary Guckian's rich vivid images of rural Ireland of the 1940's and 1950's in Leitrim have been compared with Patrick Kavanagh's Monaghan."
John Haughton, Forest Friends Ireland.
