Summer 2016 - this course has now passed.
The workshop will look at James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, specifically at the way in which it adapts, moulds, and fictionalises personal memoir to serve its own aesthetic vision. Participants will look at confessional writing in diary form, coterie writing, memoir, and the rise of the personal essay. Confessional writing and the web will be covered, from tell-all culture to the notion of 'safe spaces'. Ultimately it will be addressed whether confessional writing is exploitative or emancipatory and whether it is art or tactic.
