The course will offer an overview of feature writing for print and online media, including news features, interviews, reviews, travel writing and opinion pieces. Narrative and personal journalism will also be explored, where the techniques of fiction are used to document real life stories. Articles from The Guardian, The Irish Times, The LA Times, Nora Ephron and Martin Amis are among those that will feature. Participants will get opportunities to write themselves through a series of relevant exercises focused on the principles of clear writing and structure.
Sarah Gilmartin is an arts journalist who works for a range of national media in Ireland. She writes a weekly column on new fiction for the Irish Times and also reviews for the Sunday Times, Sunday Business Post and Irish Examiner. She lectures in feature writing at Dublin City University and is co-editor of the anthology Stinging Fly Stories (May 2018).
