The finest historical fiction is a combination of powerful storylines, page-turning characters, authentically drawn locations and accurate historical backgrounds with period details that capture the spirit, manners and social conditions of the time(s). During this two-day course you will explore the best methods of research, receive tips on how to create strong plotlines within the parameters of history, examine the pluses and minuses of writing real characters versus fictional characters and receive suggestions on sourcing period details.
Patricia O’Reilly has come the route of freelance print journalism, radio documentaries and plays, fiction and non-fiction books. Currently she teaches the writing of fiction in UCD and at various literary festivals. She has written 13 books. Her new book The First Rose of Tralee is about Mary O’Connor (182?-1845) the inspiration for the annual Rose of Tralee International Festival.
