Being a professional writer today comes with a lot of challenges and opportunities. The internet provides boundless possibilities for the writer to connect with their audience and promote their work. As well as writing, you now need to be able to present and perform your work particularly on the festival circuit. As a response to this the Irish Writers Centre has identified four key development areas crucial to the contemporary writer.

Rosemary MacCabe (journalist and social media expert), Michelle Read (writer and performer), Martin Doyle (Assistant Literary Editor, The Irish Times) and Bert Wright (former curator of Mountains to Sea dlr Book Festival) will guide you through four key development areas: Digital Marketing for Writers, Writer as Performer, The Art of Self Promotion and Getting the Gig, respectively. 

Part 1 - 10.30am-11.40am - Rosemary Mac Cabe
Digital Marketing/Social Media for Writers This session focuses on the importance of having your own website and how to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter effectively in having strong online presence.

Part 2 - 11.50am-1pm - Michelle Read
Writer as Performer The ability to perform in front of a crowd has never been more important. With the ubiquity of current recording devices the modern writer needs to be relaxed and comfortable in front of a camera and a crowded room.

Part 3 - 2-3.10pm - Martin Doyle
The Art of Self Promotion This session will investigate how the media works and how you can navigate the industry whether it's an interview or reviews for your new book.  

Part 4 - 3.20-4.30pm - Bert Wright
Getting the Gig This class will cover formulating and pitching ideas to promote your book to festival programmers.
