Course Summary:

Novels are brave but unwieldy enterprises that can sometimes get stuck in the ‘desk drawer’ or lose their momentum. Do you have a sizeable body of writing but feel blocked or lost? Have you finished something but would like to know how to polish it off, make it sing, and even find it a home in print? This course will combine themes discussions with work-shopping of participants’ works-in-progress, helping you to learn how to self-edit, better understand your own writing, and socialise your work.

Course Outline:

Participants are expected to supply representative samples of their work for peer review, or work-shopping, by the course teacher and fellow participants. You will meet once weekly (digitally, of course) for two hours and each sessions will combine work-shopping with separate discussions, led by the teacher, on topics such as character development, signature style, setting and atmosphere, and dialogue.

Course Outcomes:

Participants will have faced down and learned to name the problems they are having in progressing or finishing a novel. They will feel better able to place these in the context of novel-writing as an art. They will also benefit from feedback and self-reflection on their own writing.

Niamh Campbell is a writer of literary fiction, creative non-fiction, and academic writing, and has received multiple bursaries and financial supports from the Arts Council of Ireland and Irish Research Council. Her writing has appeared in literary and mainstream publications, and her novel This Happy has recently launched with Weidenfeld and Nicolson. She teaches at Maynooth University and is also a current finalist in the prestigious Sunday Times Audible Short Story Competition 2020.

Reviews in the media of This Happy (June 2020):

The Sunday Times: 4 out of 5 stars: 'an exhilarating coming-of-age story for fans of Sally Rooney'

The Irish Times: 4 out of 5 stars: 'From its nicely ambiguous title onwards, This Happy is a layered and vibrant debut. Campbell is great on setting, which allows her to switch between times and locations without confusing the reader. The novel is full of sensual, offbeat descriptions...'

The Sunday Telegraph: 4 out of 5 stars: 'This Happy isn’t upbeat, but its opulent unhappiness is something to enjoy [...] This is a novel of psychological texture; you’re reading for character, not for plot. There’s a beguiling shape to Alannah’s thoughts, warped by feelings and memories.'
