Course Summary:

Celebrate with poet Enda Wyley the impressive varieties of forms and creative energies that connect in the making of great poems. Be inspired by the work of established poets and be guided in your own poetry writing. Feel part of an encouraging workshop community and be open to the making of your own new poems.

Course Outline:

This six-week poetry workshop will be enjoyable, varied and interactive. You will encounter work by established poets as a means to guide you in your own writing and to inspire new work. Simple writing prompts will also be given in class which will get you into the routine of writing on a regular basis and to create new poems. There will be no pressure on anyone to share new work in the sessions – but if participants are happy to do so, the workshop will be an encouraging and positive environment for new poems to be shared and celebrated.

The workshops will also cover many themes relevant to the making of poetry, including:

  1. Reading work by established poets to guide us as emerging poets.
  2.  Being inspired by what poets have to say about poetry and the making of it.
  3.  Prompts into writing.
  4. The power of imagery.
  5.  Poetry and form
  6. The sonic and visual power of poetry
  7.  How to edit and improve a poem.
  8. When is a poem finished? This and other creative dilemmas will be addressed.
  9. What publications might be suitable to send our work to.
  10. The value of enjoying poetry and remaining enthused about reading and writing it.
  11. To show up, feel part of an encouraging writing community, and to have fun!

 Course Outcomes:

Course participants will take away from this course an increased enthusiasm for poetry – the reading and writing of it, and a deeper understanding of the making of poetry. They will also feel encouraged and confident enough to keep writing and to continue to follow their own individual journey as emerging poets.
