Online: Vroom – Splash – Ouch – Yeah! Writing for Comics, Graphic Novels and Computer Games with Gabrielle Alioth
Starts: Tues 29 June 2021
Time: 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm
Duration: 4 Weeks
All remote Irish Writers Centre courses take place on Irish Standard Time (GMT+1)
A picture is worth a thousand words. But some pictures are enhanced by words, they can explain, reinforce or challenge what the picture says. This workshop is about the interaction between image and text and it is intended for people who work on comics, graphic novels, computer games or are interested in these media. We will explore how text can be used in still and moving pictures, what it can and what it can’t do, and how writing can be used to create characters, construct scenes and develop a storyboard.
In four sessions the participants will examine
- how to create characters
- how to develop plots
- how to construct storyboards
- and how to use text in pictures
of comics, graphic novels and computer games.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own ideas and sketches and to develop and work on their individual projects. They will examine samples from existing works and try out different strategies in order to find and improve their own way of combining image and text. An important part of the workshop will be the exchange of ideas and the discussion within the group.
Participants will be writing short texts during the sessions and Gabrielle will suggest tasks to work on from one session to the next, individually, i.e. in relation to the project of the participant, or for the group.
Please note that drawing and animation skills are not required (or taught) as the workshop will focus exclusively on writing.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the role that text can play for pictures, how writing can be used to develop characters and plots and how to find their own way of combining image and word.

Reviews of Gabrielle Alioth's Work:
A born teacher and an accomplished translator, Gabrielle is always able to put students at their ease.
Dr Siobhán Donovan, Head of German Studies UCD, Dublin
Her primary strength lies in individual guidance, her incredible ability to respond individually to each student and to bring them to breaking new ground with confidence. In discussions with her many found the motivation to strive for new forms of expression and come to grips with questions of style and precise wording.
Pierre Thomé, Head of Illustration, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Switzerland
She was a very lively, open and relaxed instructor who had a wealth of personal experience and insights to offer yet was genuinely interested in her students, their individual ideas and concepts, and their intellectual growth.
Dr Jutta Ittner, Professor Emerita, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA
