Spring 2016 - this course has now passed.
What, if anything, distinguishes a poem from other forms of writing? Prose can certainly be poetic and contemporary poetry can contain elements of prose, and of course there is ‘the prose poem’. This course is designed for writers who are keen to begin but remain intimidated by the blank page. As well as writing assignments and handouts, group discussion will play an important part in these sessions. Poems, stories, essays and memoirs by contemporary writers will all be examined, teasing out the essential qualities of poetry and prose.
