This course will explore science fiction as a way of looking at the world. It will cover the false dichotomy between plot and character and look at which part of the world you show between the novum versus the whole-wide-world. Participants will engage with 'the feels', the 'wonder stuff', what your characters should take for granted and your readers don't, and, 'info-dump' taming for beginners will be incorporated.
Ian McDonald is an award-winning SFF writer living in Holywood in County Down. His first novel Desolation Road was published in 1988 and his most recent, Rising Moon, the third part of the Luna trilogy, will be published in March 2019. He's been nominated for every major SFF award in the industry and has won many including the British Science Fiction Association Award for Best Novel in 2011. He's taught at Clarion West in Seattle and the University of Southern Maine's Stonecoast MFA residentials in Ireland.
