The Irish musical landscape provides a rich tapestry for artists hoping to marry the traditional with the contemporary. This half-day masterclass with Iarla Ó Lionáird, from super group The Gloaming, will explore the opportunities (and challenges) that arise when one experiments with form and genre. How do you compete and thrive? How do you keep writing freely? Iarla will look at the practice of adaptation, the synthesis of song-writing and the poetic word, and the importance of motivation. He will also look at changes in tradition such as the migration of the oral and aural to the literal, and the importance of bringing the singing into the 21st century.

This masterclass is brought to you by the Irish Writers Centre in association with TradFest and is aimed at both emerging songwriters and established artists with an interest in traditional and contemporary music.
