This one-day intensive course will guide you through the key areas of YA fiction, from building characters and putting them in a convincing world, to plotting, structure, dialogue, and editing your work to give it the best chance in a tough market. You'll also tackle some of the particular challenges and controversies of writing for this demanding audience in today’s complex and ever-changing world. Whether you’ve got just the glimmer of an idea, or have made good progress with a novel, you’ll be further on with your YA project by the end of the day.
Described as ‘one of our foremost writers for young people’ (Robert Dunbar, Irish Times, 2015), Sheena Wilkinson has won many awards for her YA fiction since the publication of the multi-award-winning Taking Flight in 2010. These include the CBI Book of the Year 2013 for the contemporary novel Grounded and most recently the 2018 Honour Award for Fiction for Star by Star, a feminist historical novel set in 1918. Sheena is a very experienced workshop facilitator, specialising in writing for young people. She teaches creative writing at Trinity College and in many other settings, including Arvon.
