This course will take place in person on Saturday, 21 March 2026. There will be an hour break for lunch.
Course Summary
This one-day workshop will explore the dreams we have at night in playful and experimental ways focusing on collective writing and poetry. As dreams are abstract and absent as well as vivid and detailed, we will play with the creation of images, collect words in word jars and create a collective dream poem to eventually make our own dream books! As dreams often do not make sense, we will stress the surreal in writing and break with the expected.
Course Outline
We will devote the first half of the workshop to individual writing, collective dream poems, and word jars (word collections) before making our own dream books in the second half of the workshop. Everyone will leave the workshop with their own, individual art book of dreams.
Course Outcomes
You will practice describing details, drawing from material that is available to us and then interact with other people’s writing in creative ways. As the workshop focusses on spontaneous writing, it can provide you with ideas for future writing exercises and even help curing the writers’ block. Furthermore, you will take a book with you that is filled with the group’s dream writing as a souvenir and for future inspiration.
Andrea Zittlau is a poet and creative writing instructor who also has a PhD in Cultural Studies and teaches literature and cultural analysis at the American Studies department at the University of Rostock in Germany and Creative Writing and Poetry in the State Correctional Facility of Bützow. She is the founding director of the Pink Gorilla Institute, a nonprofit organization that facilitates writing workshops and publishes the outcome of these workshops in zines and art books.
