This course will take place online on Tuesdays for 6 weeks beginning 7 April (6 sessions total.)
Course Summary
This course provides an oversight into various aspects of the world of journalism, from generating ideas, pitching, and researching different publications and markets. A must for all aspiring features journalists.
Course Outline
Combining a blend of practical and creative advice, it focuses on research, interview and pitching techniques along with how to craft a finished piece. Participants will learn through online lectures and will also work on their own project. You will be provided with examples of best practice, given guidance on how to write features and feedback on one 800-word piece which you will pitch by week four, write by week five and which will be workshopped during the following week’s final session.
Session 1
Getting started. Introduction to print, broadcast and digital media journalism. News v Features. Industry overview.
Session 2
Research techniques. Ideas – how to spot, research and develop a story. Project workflows. The principles of structure, the basic elements of style.
Session 3
Pitching techniques. How to find a unique angle for your idea, how to tailor your writing to different audiences and publications. Knowing your market and crafting a verbal and written pitch. Practicalities of freelancing – what to do when a pitch is commissioned, how to find your niche and build a portfolio and how to deal with rejection.
Session 4
Interview techniques and talking to experts,
Participants pitch their ideas to the group.
Session 5
The legal and ethical framework within which journalists operate.
Participants submit their 800 word piece, for feedback next week.
Session 6
Participants get feedback and editorial advice on their written piece.
Course Outcomes
Participants will have a finished written piece and will have the skills to pitch their idea. They will also be equipped with tips and techniques on research and interviewing.
Hilary Fennell has taught journalism, media law and production at DCU, the National Film School at IADT, and Griffith College and contributes interviews and features to national media outlets. As a documentary maker, her work is distinguished by its commitment to human stories and has received international recognition, including three New York Festivals awards, the Gold Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival, and Best Documentary at both the Celtic Film Festival and the Santa Monica Film Festival. Hilary’s fiction has won or been shortlisted for prestigious awards including Seán Ó Faoláin, McLaverty and Fish and has been supported by the Arts Council. Hilary graduated with an honours degree in Law from Trinity College Dublin and qualified as a barrister at the King’s Inns.
