Course Summary
A full-day workshop (11am-4pm) introducing participants to the practical skills helpful to facilitating Creative Writing classes, instilling confidence to share skills and experience, and discussing teaching methods to assist learners in their creative development.
Exploring icebreakers and writing exercises to nurture diverse learners while gaining an insight into their various skillsets and strengths. Setting prompts to support a diverse class and facilitating open and respectful feedback from learners. Also examining freelance opportunities as well as the pathway available via the Educational Training Board (ETB) Community Education and the additional benefits the ETB can provide.
Course Outline
Session 1: Interactive icebreakers and introductions the painless way, with covert learning thrown in!
Session 2: Practical exploration and discussion of simple introductory writing exercises to suit all levels and highlight individual strengths.
Session 3: Using our own writing exercises, we will facilitate group feedback and manage respectful and supportive group conversations. We will discuss diversity and coping with individual needs within a group.
Session 4: Through group discussion and shared experiences we will look at opportunities to host and facilitate our own classes and workshops and examine the opportunities and benefits of providing tuition for the Educational Training Board (ETB).
Course Outcomes
Participants may expect to leave the workshop with an awareness of the requirements of Creative Writing learners and with the confidence and capability to support and encourage those learners, be it in-person or online.
Lissa Oliver is an award-winning horseracing journalist and a bestselling novelist, with four thrillers published by Maverick House, including bestseller Chantilly Dawns. She has taught Creative Writing as a part-time Adult Educator for ETB Community Education for more than 15 years, with both in-person and online classes. A past Chairman of the Irish Writers Union, Lissa is on the Board of Directors of the Irish Copyright Licensing Agency.
