Anthony Horowitz in Conversation with Declan Burke

For the third and final interview in our series, Declan Burke will interview fellow crime-writer, best-selling author Anthony Horowitz about his writing life, all things crime, and more!

Anthony Horowitz is one of the most prolific and successful writers working in the UK – and is unique for working across so many media. Anthony is a born polymath; writing books, TV series, films, plays and journalism. His teen fiction includes the bestselling teen spy series Alex Rider, which is estimated to have sold 21 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a hugely successful television series produced by Sony and Eleventh Hour Films.
Anthony is also an acclaimed writer for adults and was commissioned to write two new Sherlock Holmes novels The House of Silk and Moriarty. He was commissioned by the Ian Fleming estate to write three continuation novels for James Bond - Trigger Mortis, Forever and Day and With a Mind to Kill.
His series featuring Detective Hawthorne and an unlikely sidekick called Anthony Horowitz has six books so far: The Word is Murder, The Sentence is Death, A Line to Kill, The Twist of a Knife, Close to Death and A Deadly Episode which was published in April 2026.
His three bestselling crime novels, Magpie Murders, Moonflower Murders and Marble Hall Murders have all been filmed for the BBC with Lesley Manville in the lead role. Marble Hall Murders is scheduled to air later this year.
Anthony is also responsible for creating and writing some of the UK’s most beloved and successful television series including Midsomer Murders and he is the writer and creator of award-winning drama series Foyle’s War.
His most recent television series Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue was aired on the BBC in the UK in September 2025.
Since 2019, Anthony has been a patron of Home-Start Suffolk, a charity supporting families throughout Suffolk, and he was awarded a CBE in 2022 for his services to literature.

A creative writing tutor with the Irish Writers Centre for the past 12 years, Declan Burke is the author of seven novels, and the editor of three further titles. Absolute Zero Cool received the Goldsboro Award (UK) in 2012. Books to Die For, co-edited with John Connolly, won the Anthony Award (US) in 2013. Three of his novels have been shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards. Declan was a UNESCO / Dublin City Council writer-in-residence for 2017-18. His most recent novel, The Lammisters (2019), was a Book of the Year in the Guardian and the Sunday Independent.
