Evolution of Telecommunications by Brendan Kearns

The book delivers twenty-two chapters that chart the journey of telecommunications from Morse code to 5G, and on to AI and Quantum Computing. It begins with the invention of the telegraph and telephone, before delving into the evolution of switching, signalling, and transmission.

It then moves on to the creation of applications and examines how telecoms hardware and user devices have evolved. Topics such as telecoms law, cybersecurity, Wi-Fi technologies, and messaging systems complete the first half of the book.

The next four chapters focus on the history of telecommunications in Ireland. Beginning with an overview, they tell the story of transatlantic cables, the rise and fall of the national telephone network, and the introduction and expansion of broadband across the country.

The final chapters explore the role of programming languages in telecoms, along with recent advances in Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing.

Each chapter is a self-contained story. The book is designed so that it can be read in any order, allowing readers to dip in and out as they please.

The book is for sale on amazon.ie now.
