The Irish Writers Centre presents a two-hour lecture style masterclass with Alan McMonagle at The Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone. This masterclass is part of Writers in the Regions, our in-person masterclass series aimed at broadening our reach into the vibrant writing communities around the country and bringing expertise and experience to writers at different stages of their writing journey.

About the Masterclass: ‘Every good story has a beginning, a muddle and an end.’

Incorporating aspects from his own writing adventure to date, in this two-hour fiction-writing taster seminar Alan will take you through the array of elements that go into an effective piece of prose fiction; he will offer thoughts on openings, voice, character, dialogue, point-of-view, setting, endings and plot, along with ideas about structuring your work, and some takeaway writing prompts. There will also be room for participant questions. Suitable for committed beginners and those who may have been writing for some time.

Alan McMonagle has written for radio, stage, and published two collections of short stories (Psychotic Episodes and Liar Liar). Ithaca, his first novel, was published by Picador in 2017, and longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Award for first novels, the Dublin Literary Award, and shortlisted for an Irish Book Award. His second novel, Laura Cassidy’s Walk Of Fame, also with Picador, was published in 2020. He lives in Galway.

The Dean Crowe Theatre & Arts Centre is a theatre and arts space in Athlone, County Westmeath.
