The Irish Writers Centre presents a two-hour lecture style masterclass with David Butler at the Galway City Museum, Galway. This masterclass is part of Writers in the Regions, our in-person masterclass series aimed at broadening our reach into the vibrant writing communities around the country and bringing expertise and experience to writers at different stages of their writing journey.

About the Masterclass: Finish Your Novel Highlights

How do stories work? How are they told to greatest effect? What makes for an effective opening? How important is point of view? What is ‘three act structure’? What do we mean by ‘character arc’? In this one-off session, David Butler will be examining these and other questions, with examples drawn from great literature down the ages.

David Butler is a multi-award winning novelist, poet, short-story writer and playwright. His third novel, City of Dis (New Island) was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year, 2015, while Dedalus Books (Irl) published his sixth novel, Scorched Earth in 2025 under pen-name Dara Kavanagh. Also in 2025, Arlen House brought out his third short story collection, White Spirits, while his third poetry collection, Liffey Sequence, was published in 2021 by Doire Press. Literary awards include the Maria Edgeworth (twice), ITT/Red Line, Fish International, Benedict Kiely, Colm Tóibín and ChipLit prizes for the short story, and the Féile Filíochta, Ted McNulty, Brendan Kennelly, Poetry Ireland / Trocaire, Phizzfest and Baileborough awards for poetry. He tutors regularly with the IWC.

Focused on preserving and sharing Galway’s archaeology, history and sea science through a collections, exhibitions, events and online learning resources, the Galway City Museum was first established in 1971. Oroginally in Comerford House, the museum relocated in April 2007, with a new building designed by the Office of Public Works and it is now a Galway City Council initiative to advance the cultural and heritage life of Galway City.
