The Irish Writers Centre is delighted today to announce our exciting programme of events in celebration of Black History Month this October!

We’ll kick off with the return of our open mic night series ‘Takin the Mic’, on Thursday 15th October from 6:30-8:00pm. For this edition, we welcome Black writers to submit via open call, ten of whom will be chosen to share their work to an audience at our home on Parnell Square.

The night will be MC’d by multidisciplinary artist Dafe Orugbo. This event is free but booking is essential. Tickets are available via Eventbrite here.

The following Thursday, 22nd October, head across the square with us to number 11 for our collaborative showcase with Poetry Ireland! For the second-year running, we’ll celebrate Ireland’s rising Black writing talent, beginning from 6:30pm. Watch this space for updates on the lineup and booking details!

Finally, on Saturday 24th October poet, storyteller and playwright Nandi Jola will facilitate a creative writing workshop for writers with a Global Majority background. This will follow on from her morning session leading the New Irish Communities.

Global Majority is a collective term that refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, Mixed Heritage, Indigenous to the Global South and/or are not racialised as White. (Source: UWE Bristol, 2025) The workshop will cover poems, prose, and short stories over 3 hours from 2:00-5:00pm and places are available to book here.

We look forward to welcoming you to one (or all) of these fantastic events this Black History Month!
