Course Summary

Interested in trying your hand at translating poetry or developing your own translation project? Have you ever wondered about the poems you read in translation? This Poetry Translation Taster is an engaging workshop for readers of translated poetry as well as anyone who would like start or continue translating.

Course Outline

We’ll look at the challenges and joys of translating poetry, consider what is lost and found in translation and explore how poetry translating is different from prose translation. We’ll have a go at short translation exercises and look at ways participants might start/ develop their own projects. Participants will be introduced to a variety of works in translation (often the same poem approached by different poets) from early Japanese and Irish poetry and on to contemporary poets.

Course Outcomes

Expect to come away with a greater awareness of the craft of poetry translation; a set of exercises and draft translations as well as more confidence about starting/ continuing your own translation project.

Nell Regan’s latest collection is Thirty-Six Views of the Sugarloaf ( Arlen House, 2026). With James Hadley she co-translated A Gap in the Clouds: The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu (Dedalus Press, 2021) and her co- translation of Micheál Mac Liammóir’s Irish language poetry is forthcoming. She was a Fellow at the International Writing Programme, Iowa and awards include a Patrick & Katherine Kavanagh Fellowship and Arts Council Literature Bursaries. www.nellregan.com
