Course Summary

This course will show you how to use description to its best effect and how to create memorable fictional settings in your writing.

Course Outline

Week One: How to make descriptions feel real and immersive to your reader. Understanding the difference between ‘showing and telling’ and learning about ‘psychic distance’ – often a ‘eureka moment’ for writers.

Week Two: Making fictional settings come to life. We will look at how you choose where your story is set and what descriptive details to include and what to leave out. How to ‘world build’ whether you are writing fantasy or writing in the real world.

Week Three: How character and setting come together. Places are always seen through someone’s eyes. How do you make sure your settings are filtered through the perceptions and experiences of your characters?

Each session will include a range of written exercises. You can submit a piece of up to 1,000 words at the of the course for direct feedback.

Course Outcomes

The participants will come away with an understanding of how to write description that adds colour and vibrancy to their work and how to create brilliant, memorable settings.
