Aims

To encourage a wider audience of writers to embed nature, ecology, and climate solutions into their stories. Whether they write poetry, historical fiction, crime, romance, sci-fi, or literary prose, they can learn how words can alter the behaviour of individuals and society, towards a more sustainable way of living. They will learn what constitutes solution-based creative writing and help save the future of the planet through stories.

Suitable for all levels of writing experience and all levels of hearing loss, tinnitus, and deafness.

This workshop aims to enable students to think critically about their writing approaches to the environment, to broaden their knowledge of the genre, and to expand their involvement in an international movement of writers affecting change. An in-person event which combines writing exercises, discussion, and workshopping participants’ own work.

Objectives

Attendees will demonstrate a knowledge of contemporary climate poetry and prose, an understanding of climate solutions and how to research them and will have the tools to embed these into any genre of writing. As part of a world-wide movement, their work will contribute to generating and spreading change through artistic vision. Writers who are D/deaf/hard of hearing/have tinnitus will have experienced an accessible writing workshop where hearing loss is no barrier to participation.

Lynn Buckle is an award-winning hard of hearing author published by époque press. Her second novel, What Willow Says celebrates nature, deafness, languages, and familial love. Exploring the landscapes and stories of the midlands, it presents a unique perspective on trees and embedded climate action. It was an Irish Times and Independent critics’ pick-of-the-year and won The Barbellion Prize, an international literary award dedicated to the furtherance of chronically ill and disabled voices. Lynn received the Greywood Arts Carers Award, The John Hewitt Society Bursary, and a Special Mention in the Saboteur Awards. She was shortlisted for The Red Line Short Story Award and represented Ireland as a UNESCO Cities of Literature Writer in Residence at the UK National Centre for Writing. She writes literary articles and creative non-fiction for The Irish Times, Arachne Press, Massachusetts Review, Exacting Clam, Books Ireland Magazine, Distinct at Disrupt Disability Festival, and appears in various anthologies. She has worked in education as a qualified tutor for over 35 years and founded the climate writers’ group, Writing for a Change, at The Irish Writers’ Centre where she teaches creative writing. She is also a visual artist and works for Chime, the national deaf and hard-of-hearing charity.
