The Irish Writers Centre Bilingual Takin’ the Mic is a fantastic evening of poetry and prose in English and Irish. Featuring MC Liam Mac Amhlaigh and special guest writer, Tanya Farrelly, there will be an open mic with writers, poets and musicians. All welcome. This event is supported by Foras na Gaeilge.

Once you have booked your ticket, you will receive an automatic email with a link to a Google form to register your interest to perform on the night. Please note, we aim to inform performers of their slot via email a week before the event. Each performer will be given three minutes.

There is no ideal Takin’ the Mic performer. At our Takin’ the Mics, we aim to showcase a diverse range of performers, from genre to experience. The questions in the google survey will help us to curate the event’s line up and make sure we are choosing a varied selection of performers. Our Takin’ the Mics are a great opportunity to showcase your new writing. You may wish to share new material or dust off a past piece to share with a new audience.

Performing in Irish? The aim of our Bilingual Takin’ the Mics is for everyone to enjoy Irish, from fluent speakers to those with just the cúpla focal. All levels welcome! We encourage writers who are performing in Irish for the first time, and those who wish to read parts in Irish and parts in English.

About the Special Guests

Liam Mac Amhlaigh is a scholar, writer and critic who lectures as an Associate Professor in Modern Irish in Maynooth University. He specialises in contemporary Irish-language literature, and Modern Irish lexicography, and has published extensively in those areas. He is the founding editor of the academic journal COMHARTaighde (comhartaighde.ie), and the curator of the digital portrait archive, Portráidí na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge (portraidi.ie). His most recent work centres on modernist Irish-language poetry of the second half of the twentieth century.

Is scoláire, scríbhneoir agus criticeoir atá i mbun léachtaí ina Ollamh Comhlach le Nua-Ghaeilge in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad. Bíonn béim faoi leith ina chuid oibre ar litríocht na Gaeilge comhaimseartha agus ar fhoclóireacht na Nua-Ghaeilge agus mórán foilsithe aige sa dá réimse. Is eagarthóir bunaidh é ar an iris acadúil COMHARTaighde (comhartaighde.ie) agus is coimeádaí é ar chartlann dhigiteach phortráidí, Portráidí na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge (portraidi.ie). Tanya Farrelly is the author of four books: two short fiction collections: When Black Dogs Sing (Kate O’ Brien Award 2017) and Nobody Needs To Know. (Arlen House, 2021), and two psychological thrillers: The Girl Behind the Lens and When Your Eyes Close (Harper Collins) She holds a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing from Bangor University, Wales and was appointed Writer-in-Residence at NUI Galway in 2021. Tanya is a recipient of an Arts Council Agility Award and has been selected for the Basic Income for the Arts Pilot Scheme. She is currently working on a historical novel.
