D’fhógair William Burroughs nach raibh sa scríbhneoireacht ach gearrthóga, colláis de na focail a léitear nó a chloistear. Teicníocht liteartha is ea an ghearrthóg ina ngearrtar téacs agus cuirtear ord nua air chun téacs úrnua a chruthú. An siosúr in áit an phinn. Lucht Dada a chuir tús leis sna 1920í ach ba é William S. Burroughs a chuir bailchríoch air. Ó shin i leith, is iomaí duine a bhain leas as an teicníocht, ina measc na cumadóirí amhrán David Bowie, Jurt Cobain agus Thom Yorke. Sa tionscadal speisialta gearrthóg seo, arna léiriú ag IMRAM agus REIC d’Aras na Scríbhneoirí beidh scríbhneoirí Gaeilge – Ciara Ní Éanacháin, Míchéal Ó Ruairc agus Alan Titley (agus aíonna eile) chun saothar leo féin agus le daoine eile a ghearradh. Beidh deis ag an lucht féachána triail a bhaint as an teicníc chomh maith.
The cut-up is a literary technique in which a text is cut up and rearranged to create new text. The concept can be traced to the Dadaists of the 1920s, but was popularised in the late 1950s and early 1960s by writer William S. Burroughs, and has since been used in a wide variety of contexts. In this special cut-up project, produced by IMRAM and REIC for the Irish Writers Centre, Irish language writers – Ciara Ní Éanacháin, Míchéal Ó Ruairc and Alan Titley (and other special guests) – will produce cut-ups of both their own work and of well-known texts. The audience will also have a chance to experiment with the technique.
