Course Summary

Creative Non-Fiction is an increasingly popular genre that uses evocative language tell true stories in a compelling way. In this two-part practical and theoretical workshop, participants will get a solid grounding in understanding and writing in this form.


Course Outline

In the first session theoretical presentations, readings, discussions, and practical work will set the scene for understanding the scope and potential of writing Creative Non-Fiction. Reading material will be provided to participants along with a short exercise in advance of the workshop, and a writing practice exercise will be set for the second session. The second session will be devoted entirely to group critique of the new writing arising from participant’s completion of the exercise, the feedback to be discussed in a structured, supported, and encouraging way.


Course Outcomes

Participants will complete the course with a firmer grasp of what Creative Non-Fiction entails, as well as feedback on their writing. Please note there will be preparatory work before the first session, and a writing exercise set for the second session.


Arnold Thomas Fanning’s Creative Non-Fiction has been widely published including in Banshee, The Stinging Fly, and Show Your Work: Essays from the Dublin Review. His work has frequently been broadcast on radio, including Keywords and Arena on RTÉ Radio 1. He has facilitated in many settings including as Writer in Residence for University of Galway, for The Lantern Project in Nano Nagle Place in Cork City, and for the Stinging Fly Summer School. His book, Mind on Fire: A Memoir of Madness and Recovery, was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize.
