This course will take place online on Saturdays (two sessions in total). 

Course Summary

During this two-part seminar the focus will be on two essential craft elements in fiction: dialogue and point of view.


Course Outline

We will be working with fiction by dialogue masters such as Camille Bordas, Jhumpa Lahiri, Kevin Barry, Elizabeth McCracken, Grace Paley or Mary Gaitskill. Each session will also include writing exercises to help jumpstart new ways of writing dialogue and experimenting with point of view.


Course Outcomes

Students will have completed several exercises focused on dialogue and point of view in fiction. They will have read a wide-range of fiction and experimented with style in their own work.

Participants will finish the short seminar with a revision plan for their own stories or novel as well as new tools for writing more each and every week.


Madeline Beach Carey is the author of the story collection Les filles dels altres. Her work has appeared in Southword, Conjunctions, El Món d’Ahir, The Sultan’s Seal, Full Stop, The Momentist, and elsewhere. Carey has been the recipient of awards and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the Edward Albee Foundation, Faber Residency, Hawthornden Castle, Greywood Arts, and Ventspils House.

Carey worked for many years as a political speechwriter in Catalonia. Now she dedicates her time to other kinds of fictions.
