This course will take place online on Wednesdays for 10 weeks.

Please note that class will not take place on Wednesday 31 July and the course will end on Wednesday 18 September.

Course Summary

This 10-week course is ideal for writers intending to enter Irish Writers Centre Novel Fair 2025. Beginning in the second week of July and ending mid-September, with a writing week in late July, this is a practical course for writers who are part way through writing a novel. Participants will workshop together to further the progress of their manuscripts, as well as engage in discussions on a weekly topic such as characterisation, dialogue, drama, etc., which are designed to strengthen the quality of their writing. More than twenty past participants of this course have secured book deals.


Course Outline

The course covers practical topics such as characterisation; drama; dialogue; endings; action scenes; romance; prose style and narrative voice. Each session discusses one classic example from the world of literature to focus on the issue for an hour. Then, in the second hour, participants read from their own work and get feedback.

Conor Kostick is the author of a number of successful books. In 2009, he was presented with a Special Merit Award by the Reading Association of Ireland; in 2010 he was the Farmleigh Writer-in-Residence. Conor is often asked to judge literary competitions and in 2016 and 2019 was the president of the Irish jury for the EU Prize for Literature.
