Introducing the Writing for a Change: Flash Fiction Winners!

We are pleased to announce the winners of the Writing for a Change: Flash Fiction Competition in association with the National Botanic Gardens and the Five Lamps Arts Festival. We received well over one hundred submissions, leaving our judges with the unenviable task of whittling it down to four winners – one in each category: English Language over 30, under 30, Irish language over 30 and under 30. Congratulations to:

Geraldine McCarthy

Jasper Stone

Ian McMillan 

Katie McGreal

Geraldine McCarthy is the winner of the English Language over 30 category with her story, “Tell Me A Story”. Geraldine lives in West Cork and writes short stories, flash fiction and poetry. Her work has been published in various journals online and in print.  

Jasper Stone is the winner of the English Language under 30 category with his story “Grilled Bread”. Jasper is a geologist who has put down the rock-hammer, and picked up the pen until further notice.

Ian McMillian is the winner of the Irish Language over 30 category with his story “Clúidíní”. Ian was born in Belfast, but now lives with his family near the Mournes in County Down. He is a teacher in an integrated school.

Katie McGreal is the winner of the Irish Language under 30 category with her story “An Turtar Bocht”. Katie is an Irish speaking mindfulness and relaxation teacher from Dublin. She is editor of the magazine Mionlach and she believes and fights for language and women’s rights.

All four winners will receive:

• A place on a one-day writing workshop at the IWC
• Publication in a partner Irish literary magazine (Books Ireland)
• €50 book voucher

Well done to all four winners. We cannot wait to hear their pieces at the Writing for a Change: Flash Fiction Competition Showcase Event on Thurs 4 April in the National Botanic Gardens at 7:30pm.
