The Irish Writers Centre is excited to announce the 2025 New Irish Communities, a series of six creative writing sessions for non-native speakers to explore creative writing in English, taking place on Saturday mornings between 11am-1.00pm.
Join writer Aashima Rana for two hours of creative writing exercises in a supportive workshop environment. These sessions are ideal for beginner and emerging writers.
New Irish Communities was established in 2013 by the Irish Writers Centre and is supported by Dublin City Council.
Aashima Rana has a PhD from Dublin City University, Ireland. Her research interest explores connections between the United States of America, India and Ireland, emphasising folk cultures there. She aims at walking down the lane of trans-continental, trans-national, trans-cultural homogenisation through orality. She looks towards how folklore and its performance critiques the perpetuation of violence and will reflect on the novel ways of engaging with history offered by the women folk orally, later in writing. Aashima is an enthusiast folklorist. She writes flash fiction and poetry inspired or drawn from folk lives. She began her writing journey through RTÉ Brainstorm which encouraged her to go ahead and submit her write ups.
How does New Irish Communities work?
Each stand alone session lasts two hours and will consist of the following:
- Creative writing exercises
- Close readings
- Group discussion
- Critique and feedback of work
- Recommended reading
Please note, it is not necessary to have attended any previous New Irish Communities sessions to join in, but it is necessary to sign up.
