Birr Writers Residency Week 

Each year up to four professional writers are offered an opportunity to steal away from their busy lives to Brendan House, to find in their quiet moments, ideas for new writing and to put pen to paper in progress.


Dromineer-Nenagh Literary Festival Writer in Residence for 2019 

Expressions of interest are welcomed from experienced writers across all genres (Fiction, Non-fiction, Short Stories, Poetry, Spoken Word, Memoir, Songwriting/Composition, Play/Script writing). We are particularly interested in writers who can work creatively to engage the local community and who have experience of socially engaged practice in community or healthcare settings (not schools). We are aiming for this year’s Writer in Residence to work with and encourage the imaginations of either adults or young people as well as to develop their own work.

2019 John McGahern Award for Literature

Deadline: 31 July 2019

Details: This is an open call to writers of fiction resident in the Republic of Ireland. Applicants must have had some fiction or short stories published in a recognised journal or anthology selected by an established publisher or editor. As part of the Iron Mountain Literature Festival, Leitrim County Council and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre with the support of the McGahern Estate host the John McGahern Award for Literature to encourage the development of emerging Irish writers and to pay tribute to the exceptional contribution of John McGahern to literature, and to Leitrim. The recipient of the award will receive a two-week fully resourced residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and a stipend of €1,000, and will be publicly announced during the festival on Saturday 5th October 2019.

Education and Training Boards (ETBs) recruit Writers in Residence at various times for schools under their remit.

Meath County Council Call for Writer-in-Residence 

Deadline 2019March 19th 2019 at 5:00pm. Meath County Council invites applications for a Writer in Residence for the period April 2019 to October 2019. The residency will be managed by Meath County Council Library Service. 


Red Line Book Festival 2019 Writer in Residence 

Deadline: 12pm, Friday 17 May 2019.

Red Line Book Festival is inviting applications from writers for their inaugural Writer in Residence programme. The ten-week residency in South Dublin County runs from August to October 2019 and is supported by Creative Ireland in conjunction with South Dublin Libraries and Arts. This residency is open to all forms of writing including, but not limited to prose, poetry, playwriting, and writing for children. For more details, click here

John Broderick Writer in Residence – call for 2019 / 2020 residency in Athlone

Athlone is to have its second writer in residence programme, a gift from one of the town’s most distinguished writers, the late John Broderick. In a partnership between the Arts Council and Westmeath County Council, the application process is now open through Westmeath Arts Office. The value of the residency to the writer is €15,000 and the closing date of 11 April 2019.

Writer of the City of Graz – Deadline 31 March 2019. The city of Graz awards the "Writer of the City of Graz" scholarship each year. It includes the provision of an apartment for free in the Cerrini-Schloessl on the Schlossberg, from September 1st of the year of awarding until August 31st of the following year, and a monthly allowance of EURO 1.300,--. The Kulturvermittlung Steiermark will supervise the guest in consultation with the City of Graz-Department for Cultural Affairs.
