Mary Rose Callaghan Memoir Autobiography

A Life in Words – Memoir and Autobiography

The genres of memoir and autobiography are currently riding high in the non-fiction book charts. In this course, the differences and similarities between both forms of life stories are explored. Extracts from some best-selling memoirs also called creative non-fiction, such as Michelle Obama’s Becoming and Arnold Fanning’s Mind on Fire will be examined amid discussions about their phenomenal success.  Participants will be encouraged to select a scene from real life to open their memoir/autobiography. This scene should express a theme, which could run through the book. The course will show that writing a life story can be approached in the same way as a novel, with characters, structure and a timeline and participants will leave with a work-in-progress memoir.  The atmosphere of the course will be supportive and encouraging.

Mary Rose Callaghan is a novelist and was an assistant editor of The Dictionary of Irish Literature. She has taught at the University of Delaware and has previously provided writing workshops for Arlen House. Her memoir, The Deep End, was published to critical acclaim in 2016.
