What is memoir and how does it differ from autobiography? The course will discuss the difference between these two genres. It will look at extracts from best-selling memoirs, also called creative non-fiction, such as Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes and Tobias Wollf’s This Boy’s Life, and discuss why they are so successful. Participants will be encouraged to select a scene from real life to open a memoir. This scene should express a theme, which could run through the book. The course will show that writing a memoir can be approached in the same way as a novel, with characters, structure and a timeline. The atmosphere of the course will be supportive and encouraging.
Mary Rose Callaghan is a novelist and was an assistant editor of The Dictionary of Irish Literature. Her memoir, The Deep End, was published to critical acclaim in 2016.
